Darrell Earnest
Program: Development of Mathematics and
Science
2007 M.A. Education, University of California,
Berkeley
Darrell came to Berkeley to study the development of mathematical reasoning—and in particular algebraic reasoning—in elementary and middle school. Before coming to the west coast, he spent six years at TERC in Cambridge, MA, as a researcher and curriculum developer. During this time, he was a researcher and teacher on the Early Algebra, Early Arithmetic project and a collaborating author on the revisions of the K-5 TERC Investigations in Number, Data and Space curriculum. He pursued further graduate work to better understand the role sociocultural practices on learning and development, and in particular how interpretations of mathematical representations are negotiated and constructed through instruction and learning. When he’s not working on LMR or fulfilling program milestones, he likes to run and be outdoors, ski, read historical fiction, make soup, ponder how he could move somewhere without snow, watch reality TV, and play with his cat, Beetle.
Areas of specialization/interest: mathematical representations (especially graphs and algebraic symbolic notation), cognitive development, algebra, fractions, and the intersection of mathematical fluency and civil rights.
